On page search engine optimization - Affiliate Marketing Introduction

On page search engine optimization refers to those things you can do on your webpages to help them perform better in the search engines. On page SEO may not be as important as Off page SEO for getting good SERPs position in Google but it certainly makes a big difference

  • Keyword Selection: Your choice of keyword is crucial to SEO. Imagine trying to optimize a page for 'search engine optimization'. In todays internet, that keyword phrase is very competitive and the web pages that appear on the first page of Google for this have a ton of backlinks and probably are on sites with a ton of pages like wikipedia. You could opt to optimize for competitive keywords but be ready to do a lot of work. An easier option is to optimize for long tail variations of the keyword you are targetting so 'On page Search engine optimization' or 'search engine optimization tips' probably command less traffic but also have less competition and are therefore less arduous to optimize for.

  • Keyword in URL: Try and get a URL that contains your keyword in it. If your niche is healthy dog food, then a URL that has the term healthy dog food is ideal. Whether or not using hyphens helps is not yet determined but getting a hyphenated version is more useful than getting a URL that does not contain your keywords at all. If you cannot get a domain name with the keywords, try to make sure that the page name has the keywords i.e. yourdomain.com/keywords.html

  • Keyword in Page Title: Keywords early in your page title also has some SEO benefit. Also only the first 60 characters in your title count towards your SEO so try to keep your page title limited to 60 characters. The page title is found in the html code of your webpage in the header section. Include your tite between the <title></title> tags. Make sure your keyword appears early in whatever title you give the page. The page title is the text displayed in the bar right at the top of the browser when a web page is loaded.

  • Keywords in Headers: Using your keywords in your header, especialy your H1 header is good practice with regards to on page Search engine optimization. Include the keyword in a longer phrase rather than using the keyword as a stand alone header. Eg. 'On Page SEO The Basics'  is a better H1  header than 'On page SEO'

  • Keyword prominence: Positioning your keyword or phrase in the early part of your webpage body is also good for search engine optimization. Mkae sure that your keyword phrase appears within the first 50 words of your page content. The inclusion in the header tag does not count towards this.

  • Occasionally bold your keyword/phrase. This draws the search engine spiders or bots attention to it. Bold or strong, depending on what editor you are using, signifies emphasis.

  • Do not stuff your webpage with keywords. Keyword density is not a finite aspect of on page search engine optimization and you will get different figures quoted as the ideal keyword density for SEO. I suggest 3 to 5%. If your keyword density is too high, you may be seen by the search engines as spamming and this could hurt your ranking. Use your keywords often and appropriately. You'll find that if you just write naturally about a certain topic, like I am doing here, the keyword density will naturally tend towards 3%.

  • Avoid using too many stop words in your title. These are words that the search engine spiders do not ascribe any importance to when reading and indexing the content of your website. Because they do not count towards your SEO, these words should be avoided if possible in your choice search engine optimization areas like title tags and header tags. Examples of stop words include and, the, an, for, to, him, her, that, etc

  • As you learn more about on page search engine optimization you will find that some techniques do not work for you. To more easily discern between on page optimization techniques that work and the duds, I suggest you try one thing at a time. Watch for a few days to see what  impact the particular SEO technique has on your ranking before determining if this is a good technique. Do not do too many things at once or you will never know what works and what doesn't
